When Anna Veloz started Little Avery Cakes around three years ago, initially only as a side business, she was actually already baking for years, though only as a hobby.
And so at that time, “I already had most of the tools and equipment (like the oven) that I need when I started,” Anna recalled; meaning she only had to spend “roughly around P10,000 to P15,000 initial capital for ingredients and additional tools that I needed at that time.”
Starting wasn’t easy, she said, because of time management as she still has a full-time job on top of starting a cake business. But there’s a solution here, i.e. “I try not to overbook on cake orders. I’ve decided what my booking limitations are and I don’t go past them. I also rarely accept rush orders, unless it was for someone I know personally.”
Anna remembered overbooking for a week “and I had to multitask and overextend myself on a lot of things and it was just stressful.”
But this – in a way – is what makes the offerings of Little Avery Cakes special; they’re never rushed, and done with… shall we say TLC.
“My bestsellers in terms of cake flavors are Chocolate and Hummingbird. For custom cakes, the pricing depends on the size of cake and complexity of design. For a standard size 8-inch round cake, the pricing is around P2,500. Bigger, multi-tiered cakes obviously costs more,” Anna said.
And what makes these offerings different from those already offered in the market?
“I offer more variety in cake flavors. Other custom cake businesses only have one flavor option – chocolate cake. I try to offer different options and pairings,” Anna said, adding that “I also make sure I use premium ingredients because you can really tell the difference when you taste it. Not all butter tastes the same, and not all chocolate tastes the same. The better the quality, the better the taste.”
Due to this approach, Little Avery Cakes has already attained ROI (return on investment).
“Is this a profitable venture? It is for me, maybe because I’m only doing it part time. If I would decide to do this business full time, then I have to up my game, book more cake orders, engage in aggressive marketing, maybe hire additional staff. ROI would probably take longer than it did for me. But it’s still profitable in the long run,” Anna said.
