It was the Covid-19 lockdown that “forced” Apple Conlu-Veloso to, finally, open Swannie’s.
In 2018, the idea was already there. “We were suppose to start selling cooked food back then to help fund the hospitalization of our mother,” she said. But “we weren’t able to really pursue it until ECQ started.”
Swannie’s now sells – usually – high-end fresh goods, from lobsters to crabs to oysters, etc. But also being sold are cooked versions.
And Swannie’s grew fast – initially being offered only to neighbors, then to neighboring villages, and… other neighboring areas.
“Most of the items that we sell are premium item; hard to find in regular wet markets,” Apple said. “You can find them in groceries but you have to spend time lining up and to be more exposed to the virus is not really the best option.”
Then there’s the fact that “if they do not want to cook, we also offer paluto on some of our items.”
What are the bestsellers?
Consider the Seafood Galore, which has crabs and shrimps smothered in Swannie’s special sauce. It sells for PhP1,199 (for 4-5 people), or PhP2,399 (for 8-10 people). Must check also includes the Steamed Pompano (one large Golden Pompano sells for PhP550, and two large Golden Pompano sells for PhP999).
