When Marian de la Merced established Anastasius in 2010, with a startup capital of around PhP20,000, it was a move to deal with fear.

“When my mother – who inspired me the most – died, I had the courage to start my own business,” Marian said. “I did not imagine myself doing this before because I was too scared to take risks.”

But baking was always her passion.

Marian took up Business Management at Assumption College, but she also took short courses at ISCHAM and from other chefs in the Philippines.

These helped her make Anastasius create waves.

“(We take pride in) the quality of what we offer, and in the service of Anastasius,” she said.

What are your bestsellers?

Try the Frozen Classic Brazo de Mercedes, PhP450; Frozen Ube Brazo de Mercedes, PhP500; Frozen Strawberry Brazo de Mercedes, PhP500; Frozen Avocado Brazo de Mercedes, PhP500; and the Brazo Cheesecake, PhP1,100.

That these are yummy goes without saying; helping Anastasius to easily reach ROI.

For Marian, getting over that initial fear is the biggest challenge.

“At first I was really scared to enter this line of business because it is too risky,” she said. “But my late husband told me to take risks because my talent and hard work will be useless if I did not do so.”

Nowadays, her children inspire her. “I want them to take over my business someday; and due to the pandemic I can see and feel that they are helping me. They are now taking over my business slowly and I am very happy.”

For people who may want to also open their business, what tips can Marian give?

“Do not be afraid to take risks because it will help you grow as an individual,” she said. “Love what you are doing. Give good service to your customers. And always be open for improvements.”
